Drug and Alcohol Detox for Veterans and Active-Duty Military
Safe, confidential, medically supervised detox designed for veterans, active-duty military, and their families.

Military-Informed Substance Abuse Treatment
Veterans and active-duty military members with PTSD, military-induced trauma, or another mental health disorder may return home from service and turn to drugs or alcohol to cope. This is especially common for those who have served in combat.
The first step in overcoming addiction is supervised detox to effectively rid any substances from the body and lay the foundation for long-term recovery.
The Importance of Supervised Detox
When struggling with addiction, the body develops physical dependence on drugs or alcohol. Quitting certain substances such as opioids or alcohol without medical supervision can be nearly impossible and lead to dangerous consequences, including:
- Gastrointestinal problems (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea)
- Fever, sweating, or trembling
- Muscle spasms or joint pain
- Depression, anxiety, or paranoia
- Increased heart rate or blood pressure
- Dehydration
- Seizures
- Restlessness or agitation

Benefits of Medically Assisted Detox
Safety
During detox, our clients’ safety remains our top priority. Our veterans and active-duty military drug detox is often completed over the course of three to ten days under the supervision of addiction specialists, medical doctors, nurses, and mental health counselors. Clients will be stabilized and vitals will be monitored 24/7 throughout the duration of their stay in detox.
Comfort
Detox can cause uncomfortable physical symptoms and this is one of the number one causes of relapse when military personnel try to detox on their own. We aim to make the process easier by providing our veterans with a comfortable environment that encourages rest and relaxation. Onsite medical staff may also prescribe medication during this process to alleviate withdrawal pain and reduce cravings.
Personalization
We understand that no two recovery journeys are the same. Your individual health needs help us provide tailored support during detox and throughout the course of treatment. For example, some clients may require medication during detox, while others don’t. Our detox program is tailored to the client’s individual needs, health, severity of addiction and where they are at in recovery.
Confidentiality
One of the biggest barriers that keeps veterans from reaching out for support is the shame and stigma around asking for help. At Miramar Health, the trust our clients put in us is of utmost importance. When clients enroll in treatment, we ensure their personal information is kept confidential and their privacy is respected throughout treatment.
Transitional Support
Our transitional services help clients receive effective treatment after they exit detox. This could include entering a residential rehab or intensive outpatient program (IOP). These programs provide clients with evidence-based therapies, medication management, and social support to increase long-term recovery success.
What Comes After Detox?
After detox, we recommend clients enter our residential treatment program, where they will live at an inpatient facility and have daily access to support services and recovery resources.
Some things to expect in our residential treatment program include:
- Trauma-Focused Psychotherapies
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
- Group Therapy
- Family Therapy
- Medication Management
- Life Skills Workshops
- Case Management
- Mindfulness-Based Activities and Meditation
- Chef-prepared meals that consider dietary restrictions
- Relapse Prevention
- Sober Living
The Benefits of Specialized Treatment for Veterans
Veteran detox and treatment centers offer a tailored approach that understands the unique challenges of those with military experience. This focused care benefits veterans in several ways:
Military Trauma-Informed
Our team of therapists and staff understand the specific kind of trauma and stress that veterans often struggle with, and many members of our team have served in the military themselves.
Holistic Approach
We approach addiction with the understanding that it is often influenced by underlying mental health problems. Our specialized programs include a blend of holistic treatments that focus on physical, mental, and spiritual healing to treat both substance abuse and mental health challenges.
Reducing Stigma
Clients with military backgrounds are often hesitant to reach out for help or speak with loved ones about their struggles due to addiction or mental health stigma. Veteran-specific therapies create a safe space to share their experiences, develop positive coping skills, and connect with others who understand the unique challenges of recovery.
Peer Support
Veteran rehab centers and treatment programs help former military personnel connect with others who have faced similar challenges. This fosters a sense of community, which is essential for successful recovery.
